  John P. Malan, DDS

  Oral Surgeon

  Dr. John P. Malan is a board-certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. An Idaho native, he graduated from Nampa High School and received his Bachelor of Science degree from Boise State University, graduating magna cum laude. Following his university studies, Dr. Malan accepted a scholarship from the US Navy and obtained his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of California San Francisco. He continued to excel in his academic studies and went on to complete his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency at the University of Washington in Seattle. During his 4 year residency, Dr. Malan trained alongside medical residents in internal medicine, general surgery, anesthesiology, plastic surgery, otolaryngology, emergency medicine, and other specialty areas. He also received intensive training in oral and facial surgery including wisdom teeth removal and other complicated dental extractions, maxillofacial trauma and reconstruction, corrective jaw surgery, head and neck pathology, and dental implant surgery. Dr. Malan is a strong advocate for advanced technology including computed tomography (CT scan), 3D and digital treatment planning for many of his surgeries. A highlight in residency was the opportunity to participate in the Hearts in Motion Cleft Lip and Palate medical missions to Guatemala. Dr. Malan served as a resident surgeon and Spanish translator. Each year hundreds of patients were treated, including many requiring complex facial surgeries. Immediately following residency, Dr. Malan began his active duty service in the US Navy in Okinawa Japan. There he was proud to serve nearly 50,000 active-duty members and their families as staff oral surgeon for 3rd Dental Battalion and later as Department Head of Oral Surgery and Dentistry at Naval Hospital Okinawa. After three years in Okinawa, he was transferred to the Naval Medical Center San Diego, where he completed his active duty commitment. During his military service, Dr. Malan received multiple awards and achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Married, with 3 children, Dr. Malan is thrilled to be home in Idaho with friends and family. In his spare time, he enjoys all things outdoors including backpacking, fishing, hunting, biking, swimming and running.

  Tim O'Brien, DDS, MD

  Oral Surgeon

  Dr. O’Brien joined Owyhee Oral & Facial Surgery in the summer of 2019. A native of Reno, Nevada, Dr. O’Brien attended the University of Nevada, Reno and graduated in the Honors College magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree (BA) in Spanish and a minor in Chemistry. After his undergraduate studies he attended the prestigious University of California Los Angeles School of Dentistry, from which he received the Doctor of Dental Surgery degree (DDS). Dr. O’Brein then completed a 6-year residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB) and also obtained the Doctor of Medicine degree (MD) at UAB Medical School. He has expertise in all aspects of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery including dental implants, complex tooth extractions, corrective jaw surgery, facial trauma repair, and the delivery of general anesthesia. After completing his residency, Dr. O’Brien practiced oral and maxillofacial surgery in Alabama until moving to Idaho. He and his family are thrilled to be in Idaho. In his spare time Dr. O’Brien and his wife love running, skiing, and being in the outdoors with their three daughters.

  Joseph D. Ballenger Jr., DDS

  Oral Surgeon

  After 30 years of practicing in Nampa at Ballenger Oral Surgery, Dr. Ballenger is thrilled to join Dr. John Malan and Dr. Tim O’Brien at Owyhee Oral & Facial Surgery. In combining practices, Dr. Ballenger will be able to continue to provide the first-class care that he is known for in the community. Dr. Ballenger grew up in Idaho, graduating from Twin Falls High School. He attended and graduated from Boise State University with a bachelor of science in health science, cum laude. In 1983 he was accepted at Creighton University Dental School through the Idaho Dental Education Program. While at Creighton he was awarded many academic honors and graduated with a doctor of dental science, magna cum laude, and graduated first in his class. In dental school, Dr. Ballenger became very interested in oral and maxillofacial surgery. He applied and was accepted to attend the University of Kentucky Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Program. This was an esteemed and respected Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Program. Many of the faculty were national and international leaders in oral and maxillofacial surgery. While at the University of Kentucky, Dr. Ballenger scored in the 99th percentile on the OMSITE exam, which examines and compares all oral and maxillofacial surgery residents nationally. In 1990, after his residency, Dr. Ballenger returns to Idaho setting up practice in Nampa. He was the first full time oral and maxillofacial surgeon in Canyon County. During his 25 years in Nampa, he has been involved and lived in the community. He has served many positions in many of these organizations. Dr. Ballenger has served two years as the Chief of Surgery at Mercy Medical Center (St. Alphonsus-Nampa). He has been an examiner on the Western Regional Examining Board (WREB). Dr. Ballenger served five years on the Idaho State Board of Dentistry with one year as chairman. As you can see, Dr. Ballenger is dedicated to his community and profession. Dr. Ballenger is married and has four adult children. He has many hobbies, including aviation and he is an avid outdoor enthusiast.
